But to them her words sound meaningless, disconnected and blown out of all proportion. In her frightened, ego-less state, the Cassandra woman may blurt out what she sees, perhaps with the unconscious hope that others might be able to make some sense of it. She may envision a negative or unexpected outcome or something which would be difficult to deal with or a truth which others, especially authority figures, would not accept. What the Cassandra woman sees is something dark and painful that may not be apparent on the surface of things or that objective facts do not corroborate. She further states that a "Cassandra woman" is very prone to hysteria because she "feels attacked not only from the outside world but also from within, especially from the body in the form of somatic, often gynaecological, complaints." Īddressing the metaphorical application of the Greek Cassandra myth, Layton Schapira states that: The intellectual specialization of this archetype creates emotional distance and can predispose relationships to a lack of emotional reciprocity and consequent dysfunctions. Layton Schapira views the Cassandra complex as resulting from a dysfunctional relationship with what she calls the " Apollo archetype", an archetype referring to any individual's or culture's pattern that is dedicated to, yet bound by, order, reason, intellect, truth, and clarity that disavows itself of anything occult or irrational. being disbelieved when attempting to relate the facticity of these experiences to others.emotional or physical suffering, including hysteria ( conversion disorder) or "women’s problems", and.dysfunctional relationships with the " Apollo archetype",.īased on clinical experience, she delineates three factors constituting the Cassandra complex: In a 1988 study, Jungian analyst Laurie Layton Schapira explored what she called the "Cassandra complex" in the lives of two of her analysands. Klein's use of the metaphor centers on the moral nature of certain predictions, which tends to evoke in others "a refusal to believe what at the same time they know to be true, and expresses the universal tendency toward denial, denial being a potent defence against persecutory anxiety and guilt." Laurie Layton Schapira Cassandra as moral conscience, "predicts ill to come and warns that punishment will follow and grief arise." Cassandra's need to point out moral infringements and subsequent social consequences is driven by what Klein calls "the destructive influences of the cruel super-ego," which is represented in the Greek myth by the god Apollo, Cassandra's overlord and persecutor. In 1963, psychoanalyst Melanie Klein provided an interpretation of Cassandra as representing the human moral conscience whose main task is to issue warnings. The Cassandra metaphor is applied by some psychologists to individuals who experience physical and emotional suffering as a result of distressing personal perceptions, and who are disbelieved when they attempt to share the cause of their suffering with others. ) Later, in 1949, French philosopher Gaston Bachelard coined the term "Cassandra Complex" to refer to a belief that things could be known in advance. "both of them agreed to treat the Cassandra-like prophecies which Thiebault kept sending from Salamanca as 'wild and whirling words.'" (The Oxford English Dictionary records use of "Cassandra like" from 1670 and of "Cassandra-like" from 1863. People have applied the metaphor in a variety of contexts, such as psychology, environmentalism, politics, science, cinema, the corporate world, and philosophy it has been in circulation since at least 1914, when Charles Oman used it in his book A History of the Peninsular War, Volume 5, published in 1914. Cassandra was left with the knowledge of future events, but could neither alter these events nor convince others of the validity of her predictions. Struck by her beauty, Apollo provided her with the gift of prophecy, but when Cassandra refused Apollo's romantic advances, he placed a curse ensuring that nobody would believe her warnings. Cassandra was a daughter of Priam, the King of Troy. The Cassandra metaphor (variously labeled the Cassandra " syndrome", " complex", " phenomenon", " predicament", " dilemma", " curse") relates to a person whose valid warnings or concerns are disbelieved by others. I spent a night boarded up in a hideout that was fortified to the teeth with barriers only to be attacked by packs of demonic dogs moments before the saving grace of the sunrise. Rather than help you, Darkwood's systems affect you in a much more neutral way. As the world deteriorates into madness around you, the only way to survive is to adapt alongside decay. But even on Normal difficulty, it's important that you recognize that this is an ambiguous world that necessitates experimentation. These are incredibly minor, but in a game as brutally unforgiving as Darkwood, it's essential to level up with caution, which subverts the entire idea of leveling up rapidly in the first place.Īs a result, opting to favor survivability over gratifyingly quick forward momentum often allows you to live longer in the end-something that's absolutely essential on Darkwood's harder modes, where lives are limited. However, these perks come at a cost: For every skill you gain, you must apply a negative effect designed to hinder you for the rest of your playthrough. These skills usually only have a minor impact on the game, allowing you to benefit from a daily single-use perk such as running without taking stamina into account. For example, the game affords you skills in exchange for cooking in ominous ovens. While the controls are clearly mapped out on the pause menu, learning how to manipulate some of the game's ostensibly unimportant mechanics can give you a major edge as you progress into its more difficult areas. Although the mechanics are quite complex, Darkwood offers an intense but fair learning curve. The game assimilates a plethora of systems into its makeup, including crafting, bartering, and combat. Even at the crack of dawn, venturing too far from your hideout can result in you coming face to face with blood-curdling, satanic sadists hellbent on mauling you to death. The best thing about this is that it doesn't rely on nighttime to be scary. Darkwood revels in its eponymous darkness-even its daytime cycles are subjected to limited visibility, courtesy of its field-of-vision illumination. However, the most recent iteration of this macabre indie game is unwaveringly confident in itself. It was inevitable that Darkwood would be compared to similar open-world survival games like the Burtonesque Don't Starve, and from a gameplay standpoint their top-down perspectives and day/night cycles are similar. Now, in 2019, Darkwood is an entirely new game. In GameSpot's early access review, writer Brett Todd admired its willingness to experiment with aesthetics and rework the concept of permadeath, but couldn't get past the fact that it wasn't quite ready to go on sale. When Darkwood originally launched in early access in 2014, it was an ambitious game that suffered from clunkiness and a lack of identity. Don't expect anything pleasant behind the warning tags. Low PAPP-A levels before the fourteenth week of gestation are associated with an increased risk for Down syndrome and trisomy 18. Levels in maternal serum increase throughout pregnancy. PAPP-A is highly expressed in first-trimester trophoblasts, participating in regulation of fetal growth. PAPP-A is a metalloproteinase that cleaves insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-4 (IGFBP-4), dramatically reducing IGFBP-4 affinity for IGF1 and IGF2, thereby regulating the availability of these growth factors at the tissue level. PAPP-A is a 187-kDa protein comprised of 4 subunits: 2 PAPP-A subunits and 2 pro-major basic protein subunits. Increased fetal NT measurements can therefore serve as an indicator of an increased risk for Down syndrome and trisomy 18. While fetal NT measurements obtained by ultrasonography increase in normal pregnancies with advancing gestational age, Down syndrome and trisomy 18 fetuses have larger NT measurements than gestational age-matched normal fetuses. The NT measurement, an ultrasound marker, is obtained by measuring the fluid-filled space within the nuchal region (back of the neck) of the fetus. If results are positive, the patient is typically offered counseling and diagnostic testing. The information from both trimesters is combined and a report is issued. The blood specimen is tested for AFP, unconjugated estriol, human chorionic gonadotropin, and inhibin A. If the risk from the first trimester is below the established cutoff, an additional serum specimen is collected in the second trimester for SEQB / Sequential Maternal Screen, Part 2, Serum. For a stand-alone NTD-risk assessment, order MAFP1 / Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP), Single Marker Screen, Maternal, Serum. When the part 1 screen is completed, NTD risk is not provided. In that event, the patient is typically offered counseling and diagnostic testing. If the result from part 1 indicates a risk for Down syndrome that is higher than the screen cutoff, the screen is completed, and a report is issued. The results of the ultrasound measurement and blood work, along with the maternal age and demographic information, are used to calculate trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) and trisomy 18 risk estimates. Along with the NT measurement, a maternal serum specimen is collected to measure pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A). Therefore, NT data is accepted only from NT-certified sonographers. The ultrasound measurement, referred to as the NT measurement, is difficult to perform accurately. This test involves an ultrasound and a blood draw. Sequential screening combines biochemical and ultrasound markers (nuchal translucency: NT) measured in both trimesters of the pregnancy. Sequential screening is a type of cross-trimester screening that has an improved detection rate as compared to either first- or second-trimester screening. Various options for maternal serum screening are available and include: first trimester, second trimester, and cross-trimester. Centrifuge and aliquot serum into a plastic vial within 2 hours of collection.Maternal serum screening is used to identify pregnancies that may have an increased risk for certain birth defects, such as trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), neural tube defects (NTD) and trisomy 18. The ultrasound and blood draw must be completed within a gestational window of 10 weeks, 0 days and 13 weeks, 6 days, which corresponds to a crown-rump length range of 31 to 80 mm.Ģ. Complete the NT/CRL Data for First Trimester/Sequential Maternal Screening.ġ. See Maternal Screening: Sonographer Approval Process. Do not send specimen to Mayo Clinic Laboratories if the sonographer is not NT-certified or before completing the application process. Nuchal translucency (NT) measurements are only accepted from NT-certified sonographers. Sequential maternal screening is a 2-part test that includes a first-trimester sample (this test) and a second-trimester sample (SEQB / Sequential Maternal Screening, Part 2, Serum).Īpproval to send specimen for first-trimester screening is required and may take up to 5 business days to complete. If a stand-alone neural tube defect risk assessment is desired, order MAFP1 / Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP), Single Marker Screen, Maternal, Serum. If collecting a second-trimester specimen is expected to be difficult, order first-trimester screening instead (1STT1 / First Trimester Maternal Screen, Serum). When part 1 is negative, part 2 must be completed in order to receive an interpretable result. Musically, LaBelle created an original blend of rock instrumentation mixed with gospel soul vocal licks that had not ever been heard before (and, arguably, not since). They were Afro-punk – decades before that phrase existed. They even became the first Black female group on the cover of Rolling Stone. They were no longer playing the chitlin’ circuit – now they were opening for The Who (The Who’s manager Kit Lambert actually produced Labelle’s first album as a trio). (Costume designer Larry Legaspi later went on to design the costumes for the group KISS.) Way ahead of their time, Labelle were by the early ‘70s three Black women performing funk-infused rock music, trading their matching dresses and wigs first for jeans and afros, but later for futuristic space outfits of silver and feathers. They connected with British music manager Vicki Wickham (known for her work with Dusty Springfield), and were soon re-invented as LaBelle.Īs if to symbolically transition from their ‘60s sound to their new world, among their first projects was a 1971 collaboration with legendary folk rock singer/songwriter Laura Nyro on the album Gonna Take A Miracle. On it they offered prominent backing vocals for Nyro’s tribute to the hits of ‘60s soul, kissing goodbye the sounds of their past. When Birdsong left the group to take Florence Ballard’s spot in The Supremes, and as Aretha Franklin took up residence as Atlantic’s reigning diva, it’s a wonder the group survived.īut the remaining trio’s inescapable singing talents were recognized in the United Kingdom – where the British rock music community often championed the Black artists and sounds that had provided rock’s roots. This traditional 1960s girl group survived the decade touring the chitlin circuit, becoming favorite live performers (nicknamed The Sweethearts of the Apollo) even if their string of mid-60s Atlantic Records singles was commercially unremarkable amid competition backed by powerhouses like Motown, Stax, and Phil Spector. And Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles were soon born. They soon paired up with Patricia Holte and Cindy Birdsong from across the river, who were part of the Philly-based Ordettes. Six decades ago, at a time when young musical acts still formed from local friends getting together instead of backstage at the Disney Channel, Sarah and Nona Hendryx were two members of the Trenton, NJ-based Del-Capris. Sarah passed away early last week at the age of 76. On this week’s Music Monday playlist, “Sarah Dash: Nightbird, Fly,” we take a closer look at the musical career of the late Sarah Dash, most known as one third of the pioneering rock/soul trio LaBelle. Says his manager at RXR Sports, Jonathan Retseck, “For rock climbing, that’s pretty good.” Though he’s avoided the big-time exposure that comes with big-time sports brands, Honnold will almost certainly make seven figures this year and next. He gets paid handsomely to speak to investors and corporations, often repurposing a Ted Talk he gave last year about “mastery.” He’ll soon become part-owner of a national chain of climbing gyms, a speculative bid on an expected uptick of interest in rock climbing. He has another ambassadorship deal with Beyond Meat, a company that makes plant-based products that resemble meat. On Oscar night, Honnold is expected to show up in a Rivian R1T All-Electric pickup truck - and sport a custom-made tuxedo that The North Face is having made just for the occasion. Rivian, which markets itself as the manufacturer of the “world’s first Electric Adventure Vehicles,” consults with Honnold on design. “And the film hasn’t even hit streaming yet.” In November, Honnold struck a multiyear brand ambassador partnership with car company Rivian, which considers Honnold a “superuser” because he lived in a van for so long. “It’s like a snowball going downhill,” he says. 24, the National Geographic-sponsored team that captured the epic journey on film, including Chin and his co-director and wife, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, might be going home with an Oscar statuette.įree Solo has brought a slew of opportunities to Honnold. Honnold, of course, goes on to do just that, his ascent of El Capitan’s Freerider route without ropes or harnesses ranking as a nearly unparalleled feat of physical achievement. Early on, filmmaker Jimmy Chin’s camera lingers on an unidentified man’s back as a disembodied voice (both belonging to Leto) asks Honnold if he would ever consider free-soloing the 3,000-foot granite monolith that is El Capitan, the mecca of the rock-climbing world. Leto makes a stealth appearance in Free Solo. “I’m getting my ass kicked,” the actor says, “which is great.” Leto continued to climb, and his friendship with Honnold grew. “There was one part where I grabbed on the end of a rope during one really slabby section,” he says. Leto, 47, remembers scrambling along a thin blade of granite toward the summit and nearly falling off. It was one of Leto’s first climbs, and they stayed out into the night. Shortly after they met, the pro climber took Leto up a classic mountain route called Matthes Crest northeast of Yosemite Valley. Leto was working on The Great Wide Open, a series of five short films about national parks and the men and women exploring them, including Honnold. Unlike the many people in Hollywood who have reached out to Honnold since the release of Free Solo, Leto, who fronts the rock band 30 Seconds to Mars and won a best supporting actor Oscar for 2013’s Dallas Buyers Club, has been climbing with him since 2015.
